Tucked or Untucked? Read the Aloha Shirt’s Hem First
Tradition and construction both point toward wearing many aloha shirts untucked, but the shirt itself supplies the best clue: start with its hem.

Straight hems favor untucked wear
A relatively straight, finished hem with side vents is designed to create a clean edge outside the trousers. The shirt still needs an appropriate length: enough to cover the waistband during movement, but not so long that the proportion overwhelms the body.
University of Hawaiʻi fashion history identifies the untucked mode as one influence in the garment’s development. That makes it more than a recent vacation styling trick.
Long shirt tails favor tucking
A pronounced curved tail supplies extra fabric to remain inside trousers. Some aloha-print shirts use this conventional dress-shirt construction and work well tucked. A stiff or bulky straight hem may bunch when forced into a waistband.
Try the complete outfit in motion. Sit, reach and walk; then check whether the shirt stays controlled and whether the print is awkwardly interrupted at the waist.
Setting finishes the decision
Local convention, workplace norms and event dress all matter. An untucked shirt can look deliberate when fit and hem support it; a tucked shirt can look equally intentional when the cut supports that choice. There is no benefit in obeying a rule while ignoring the garment.
