Cotton, Rayon or Linen? Choosing Aloha-Shirt Fabric
Fiber names are a starting point, not a performance guarantee. Weave, yarn, fabric weight, finishing and shirt construction all change how a garment feels.

Cotton: familiar and variable
Cotton aloha shirts range from crisp broadcloth to soft, lightweight lawn. A firmer weave holds the outline of the shirt and can make a print look sharp. A lighter cloth feels airier but may show wrinkles and transparency more readily.
Choose cotton when you want straightforward laundering and some structure. Still read the care label: dyes, interfacing, buttons and finishes can impose limits that the fiber name does not reveal.
Rayon: fluid drape with more care questions
Rayon is strongly associated with many mid-century aloha shirts because it can produce a fluid silhouette and saturated-looking print. It often hangs closer to the body than a crisp cotton of equal measurements, which is why size numbers alone do not predict appearance.
Care varies. Some rayon shirts are washable and others call for gentler handling or professional cleaning. Follow the permanent label rather than a generic internet rule, and avoid assuming that every fabric sold as “silky” is actual silk.
Linen and blends: texture over perfection
Linen is chosen for visible texture and a relaxed crease pattern. A linen blend can temper that character with cotton, rayon or a synthetic fiber. The exact percentage matters because a small mention of linen in a product title does not reveal what dominates the fabric.
I like linen for staying comfortable in hot conditions and for its unmistakably beachy character; the heavy wrinkling is the tradeoff. Choose it when rumpling belongs in the look, not when you want a fluid or sharply pressed surface. For any option, compare fabric composition, finished-garment measurements and care instructions as one package.
