Aloha-Shirt Construction: Buttons, Seams and Interfacing
Matched pockets attract attention, but the parts that hold a shirt together—seams, buttonholes, facings and reinforcement—often reveal more about everyday durability.

Follow the stress points
Inspect the ends of the pocket opening, side vents, underarms, button placket and collar points. These areas repeatedly flex or carry concentrated force. Reinforcement should be tidy and proportionate without distorting the surrounding cloth.
Loose thread ends alone do not prove a weak seam, but skipped stitches, open seam allowances and puckering that interrupts the placket deserve closer attention. On used shirts, look for repairs and fabric thinning beside the stitching.
Buttons need secure, usable attachment
Buttons should align with their buttonholes and allow the placket to lie flat. Natural-looking or decorative buttons may enhance the design, but material alone does not establish durability. Check for spare buttons, cracked edges and shanks that provide enough room for the cloth thickness.
Buttonholes should be fully stitched with clean openings. Fraying at a new buttonhole or a hole cut far beyond its stitching can worsen with use.
Interfacing controls shape
Collars, facings and plackets may use an additional layer to support the fabric. Too little structure can allow distortion; too much can make a light shirt feel stiff. Rippling or bubbles may indicate incompatible materials, poor fusing or laundering stress.
Ask for an interior photograph when construction matters to the price. The inside shows seam finishing, facing depth, spare-button placement and labels that a styled exterior image conceals.
Use several signals together
Pattern matching, neat seams and good buttons are evidence about specific decisions, not a universal score. Combine them with fabric identity, fit measurements, care, seller history and return terms.
For online purchases, save the listing description and photographs until the return window closes. They document what was represented and make a mismatch easier to explain.
